DCCI expresses grave concern over the HSIA cargo village fire incident

President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) Taskeen Ahmed has expressed grave concern over the fire incident occurred at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka on October 18, 2025. He said that through a high-power investigating team the reason behind this catastrophe should be brought out in front of all. He said ports are very important for trade and economy, therefore, it is a must to take effective measures to improve fire safety and fire-fighting capacity especially in these very important locations.

Taskeen Ahmed pointed out that, apart from passenger services, this major airport is predominantly used by the business community for international trade, import and export activities. Such unexpected fire incidents may create a sense of insecurity or uncertainty among the local and foreign entrepreneurs regarding cargo transport which could negatively impact Bangladesh’s image in global trade and threaten the stability of the overall economy. He also observed that such unexpected incidents might further undermine the entrepreneurs’ confidence and disrupt business operations.

As the cargo handling activities at the airport remained closed during the weekend (Friday and Saturday), relevant stakeholders expressed concern that the extent of the damage might be disastrous. DCCI President urged that the extent of damage of the awaited goods at the cargo village caused by the blazing fire should be determined as soon as possible. He urged the concerned authorities to ensure prompt compensation to the affected entrepreneurs. Taskeen Ahmed also urged the government to consider keeping cargo handling process operational even during the weekends to make the country’s business operations functioning.

Furthermore, DCCI President called for ensuring necessary medical treatment to the injured victims of the fire incident and wished them a quick recovery.
